Claudette Dion, sister to Celine Dion, has shared an update
on the singer’s health — following her stiff person syndrome (SPS) diagnosis.
In December 2022, the ace Canadian singer revealed she was
diagnosed with SPS, which is an incurable health condition.
SPS is a rare neurological disorder with features of an
autoimmune disease that causes one’s muscles to tense uncontrollably.
It is characterized by fluctuating muscle rigidity in the trunk and limbs and a heightened sensitivity to stimuli such as noise, touch, and emotional distress.
While there is no cure for SPS, there are treatments —
including anti-anxiety medicines and muscle relaxants — that can slow down its
progression.
The autoimmune disease had also forced the singer to cancel
her world tour that was scheduled for this year.
Speaking with SheMazing, Claudette said the family has not
found “any medicine that works”.
Claudette said the 55-year-old songstress is being cared for
by one of their sisters. She added that they are working closely with
researchers who specialise in the rare condition.
“When I call her and she is busy, I speak to my sister Linda
who lives with her and she tells me that she is working hard,” she said.
“She is listening to the top researchers in the field of
this rare disease as much as possible. I honestly think that she mostly needs
to rest. She always goes above and beyond, she always tries to be the best and
top of her game.
“At one point, your heart and your body are trying to tell
you something. It is important to listen to it. It is innate to her, she is
disciplined in every area of her life.
“We can not find any
medicine that works, but having hope is important.”
