Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers governor, says the robbery attack
on the state university’s female hostel was carried out by students.
A student had narrated how the robbers entered one of the
hostels through the laundry room on Thursday and attacked them.
“They entered through our laundry room, broke the wall then
attacked the first room which was the room close to the laundry room and a girl
fought with one of them,” she wrote.
The robbers were said to have carted away mobile phones, laptops and other valuables.
The incident caused female students to stage a protest over
the “spate of robbery attacks” on campus.
Armed with placards bearing various inscriptions in
now-viral footage, the disgruntled students called on the varsity authorities
to improve security on campus to forestall a recurrence.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to the university,
the state governor condemned the robbery incident and said the culprits would
be fished out, according to Punch.
“Honestly, I was
really bitter that such a thing would be happening in this jet age. Somebody
breaking into a female hostel to go and molest girls,” Fubara said.
“I said I won’t just send my aides and the police, I will
come and see things myself and assess the situation.
“Let me assure you that we must get the culprits. And I’m
sure they are not people outside. They are also students here.”
