Despite losing 100m hurdles title we are with you – NOC tells Tobi Amusan

The Board of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has sent a message of encouragement to Nigerian sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, after she lost the world women’s 100m hurdles crown to Jamaica’s Danielle Williams on Thursday at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

It was reported that Amusan shockingly finished in 6th position in 12.62 sec during the race as Williams, who previously won in Beijing in 2015, timed 12.43 seconds to edge out Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico (12.44sec) with Kendra Harrison of the United States taking bronze (12.46).

However, a statement by Tony Nezianya on behalf of Engr Habu Gumel, President of the NOC, urged Amusan not to lose her focus, adding that she is not alone in the pursuit of greatness.

The statement read in part, “We know you have been under considerable pressure lately. Do not lose your focus as the 2024 Paris Games are still a year ahead of you.

“It is through these challenging moments that we grow and discover our true resilience. Tobi, you have shown incredible strength throughout your career, and this setback will only serve as another stepping stone on your path to success.

“Remember, the most successful athletes have faced defeats but have managed to bounce back even stronger. It is during these difficult times that you develop the mental fortitude and discipline necessary to overcome obstacles.

“Take this experience as an opportunity to learn, refocus, and refine your strategies for future races.

“We do not doubt that you will bounce back, stronger than ever before.

“Remember, you are not alone in this pursuit of greatness. We believe in your exceptional talent and boundless potential. You have proven time and time again that you have what it takes to succeed.”
