Tinubu sends ECOWAS delegation to Niger Republic

President Bola Tinubu said an ECOWAS mission had been sent to the Niger Republic to intercede in the attempted coup in the country.

The President spoke after a meeting with the Benin Republic President Patrice Talon at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said Talon was mandated by ECOWAS to proceed immediately to the West African country that has been termed the most coup-prone in the region.

Tinubu is the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Head of States and Government, and the body has decided to discourage an undemocratic change of government by the military in the region.

During a meeting between Tinubu and the Presidents of Niger and Benin a fortnight ago, Talon was mandated to lead the ECOWAS delegation to Mali and Burkina Faso where the military are in control.

The News Agency of Nigeria had reported an attempted coup in Niger Republic early on Wednesday.

Sources from the country said that the presidential guards have held President Mohamed Bazoum hostage at the presidential palace in Niamey.

  2. President Tinubu shouldn’t waste his time and energy as regards the coup d’état in Niger especially when nigérien population trooped out to welcome the military take over. Niger is the wealthiest Uranium producer in the world but his citizens are impoverished by successive leaders. Obtained independence in the sixties, most francophones countries have no currency or central bank of their own. All they have are channelled to their ex colonial masters. This’s unacceptable, how can these frrancophones countries continue to live like animals despite their rich mineral resources that are shared by political elites. This’s why there are jubilations all over the place anytime when there’s military take over there. African military intervention as proposed by president Tinubu can not work because these countries are backed by Russians troops and heavily equipped with their most recent Russia weapons, and these are the same weapons that are ravaging US and his NATO weapons in Ukraine. No African troops will volunteer to fight against Russia troops in Africa because their weapons are destroyers . I advice president Tinubu to reject any western pressures on him to invade Niger, Niger is a sovereign state and has the right to do whatever he wants to do, and any foreign military intervention is condemnable as regards international law. Most of these countries have mobile satellite that can visualise images in the entire Africa and these are military hardwares which Nigeria does not have. The president must be careful of what he does or intend to do because these countries are armed to the teeth and they have been planning this coup d’état several months ago. Today you have countriesed governed by military forces are;- MALI, BUKINA-FASO, GUINEA, NIGER . For instance, in Guinea today, , his military leader Col. DUMBUYA has ordered all American to leave the country within 72 hours.
