The senate has begun the screening of President Bola
Tinubu’s ministerial nominees.
The process commenced on Monday after David Umahi, deputy
majority leader, moved a motion to that effect.
Abubakar Momoh from Edo state, a civil engineer and two-time
member of the house of representatives, has just finished his presentation and
has been asked to “take a bow and go” because he is a former federal lawmaker.
“We want to appeal to you not to go there and close your
door. You have to collaborate with us,” Godswill Akpabio, senate president,
told Momoh after asking him to “take a bow and go”.
Nyesom Wike, immediate past governor of Rivers, dressed in a
bespoke dark-blue suit, has now mounted the podium.
Wike said he left Rivers government house a hero and boasted
of the 12 flyovers and other infrastructural projects he oversaw as governor.
“Even as he was speaking, you could see the passion and love
he has for this country,” Akpabio said after Wike’s presentation.
Akpabio also pleaded with Wike to maintain an open door
policy if confirmed as minister, before asking him to take a bow and leave.
Last week, the president sent a list of 28 ministerial
nominees to the senate for confirmation.
Sixteen out of the 28 ministerial nominees are scheduled for
screening today.
The screening is taking place at the “committee of the
whole” presided by Akpabio.
