‘They’re enemies of Nigeria’ — CSOs chastise those against Emefiele’s arrest

A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) says those against the arrest of Godwin Emefiele, suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), are enemies of the country.

One Chima Uzor who claimed to be speaking on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide had said the suspension of Emefiele is “ethnic cleansing”.

However, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, distanced the group from Uzor’s statement and said the organisation would not interfere in the matter.

In a statement on Tuesday, the CSOs — Gatekeepers Foundation, Christian Muslim Youth Association of Nigeria (CMYAN), National Anti-Corruption Network, and the National Campaign Against Vandals — said Emefiele neglected his role as CBN governor and sought to be president of Nigeria.

They said the action affected the country’s foreign exchange and had adverse effects on the economy as a whole.

“The individuals or groups protesting the arrest and questioning of the suspension of governor of CBN Godwin Emefiele are enemies of Nigeria,” the statement jointly signed by Tunji Ajiboye and Peter Davids reads.

“It is erroneous to assume that deputy governors in the apex bank were all involved in the malpractices which the former CBN governor is being investigated for.”

The CSOs asked President Bola Tinubu to assess the deputy governors in the apex bank and pick Emefiele’s successor.

About three weeks ago, Tinubu suspended Emefiele while the Department of State Services (DSS) later announced that he was in its custody for “some investigative reasons”.
