Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Oluremi Tinubu, the first
lady, are present for the last sitting of the ninth senate.
Among other activities, the senators are to “certificates of
legislative service” at the valedictory session being held in the upper
legislative chamber.
Shettima, Tinubu’s wife, Senate President Ahmad Lawan and
Ovie Omo-Agege, deputy senate president, were the first set of senators to
receive their certificates.
Chinedu Akubueze, the clerk of the senate, is responsible
for handing out the certificates to the senators.
Shettima represents Borno central while Oluremi represents
Lagos central.
The valedictory session was earlier fixed for Thursday but
was postponed till Saturday because of a meeting the president had with
national assembly members-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The meeting is centred on the process
for producing the presiding officers of the 10th national assembly.
The ruling party nominated Godswill Akpabio, a former
minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Barau Jibrin, senator representing Kano
north, as senate president and deputy.
In the house of representatives, APC chose Tajudeen Abbas, a
lawmaker from Kaduna, and Benjamin Kalu, a lawmaker from Imo, as speaker and
deputy.
Despite the position of the party, Abdulaziz Yari, a former
governor of Zamfara, and Orji Uzor Kalu, chief whip of the senate, have
insisted on running for the office of the senate president.
