SERAP may sue Tinubu’s govt over president, govs 114% salary increase

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has threatened to sue President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the contentious proposed pay raise for top government officials.

SERAP announced this in a tweet on the microblogging site Twitter.

It read, “We’re suing the Tinubu administration over its outrageous and illegal 114 per cent increase in the salaries of the President, vice president, state governors and lawmakers, while over 133 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty.”

Recall that the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission had recommended an increase in the basic salaries of those holding judicial and political office.

Alhaji Muhammadu Shehu, Chairman of the commission, who was represented by the RMAFC commissioner from Kebbi State, Mrs Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, revealed this on Tuesday in Birnin Kebb, the state capital, during the presentation of the reviewed remuneration package of political and judicial office holders to the Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris.

The proposed salary increase was described as “outrageous,” with over 133 million Nigerians currently living in abject poverty.

The proposed salaries will benefit the president, his vice president, lawmakers, judges, and the 36 state governors.
