Hakeem Odumosu, a retired assistant inspector general of
police (AIG), is embarrassed by the rumour on social media that he has been
appointed as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC), TheCable understands.
In a phone chat with TheCable, an associate of the former
Lagos state commissioner of police said Odumosu was embarrassed by the
widespread rumour “as there is no substance to it”.
Abdulrasheed Bawa, the current chairman, was suspended by
President Bola Tinubu on June 14 but remains the substantive chief executive
until he is removed.
Odumosu will also have to undergo senate screening if he is
appointed.
However, reports that he had been appointed trended on
social media on Tuesday without any attribution.
Presidency did not issue any statement to make the
announcement, as it usually does.
“Odumosu was so embarrassed he had to be making calls to all
the key people he knew to confirm if it was true but there was no confirmation
from any one,” the source said.
On Tuesday morning, Odumosu himself sent a text message to
his friends and associates debunking the report.
“Good Morning everyone,” he wrote.
“I have been inundated with so many calls and messages
between yesterday and today on a purported ‘EFCC Appointment’. I just want to
use this opportunity to debunk this information and say it’s totally untrue.
“This information must have emanated from Mischief Makers
and should be totally disregarded.”
