President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that his inauguration
address on May 29 2023, did not include removal of petroleum subsidy.
Tinubu made this known while interacting with Nigerians
resident in Paris, France on Friday, after attending the Summit on New Global
Financing Pact.
Speaking on the subsidy removal, the president said: “Some
countries were bleaching us. Making just a few smugglers rich. Courage was
missing. But God gave me the opportunity.
“When I was declared a winner, I fell almost sick with joy. A few friends visited. So I asked the question, you asked me to bring this trophy, this victory what do you do with it? I won. We must change Nigeria with it.
“And then Wale Edun and co, we started debating, putting my
speech together without the question on subsidy. I got to the podium, I was
possessed with courage and I declared that the subsidy is gone.
“Until I called NNPC, they thought it was a joke of the century.
We are tired of making a few people rich, feeding smugglers and subsidizing the
next door neighbour.”
Recall that Tinubu had in his presidential inauguration
address during his swearing-in ceremony on the 29th of May 2023, announced the
removal of fuel subsidy.

We are with you on this, but pls our dear president remember majority of govt workers are state and LG workers and no matter how much you gave our govs they will not increase our salary to commiserate the subsidy removal and anticipated inflation that will follow up. I am a dep director in my state and my salary is less than 90k, even directors that are at admin line some get less than 110k. Only directors in health sector get 300k and above. So make sure our refineries resume work so that we get fuel at cheaper price. Most of past palliatives ended in the pockets of those officers that are responsible for the palliatives and their relatives.
