Man United set to retain Mason Greenwood, confirm departure of seven players

Manchester United on Friday confirmed that the club has retained Mason Greenwood despite the player’s suspension while also announcing the departure of seven players.

Recall that Man United recently suspended Greenwood after he was charged with attempted r@pe, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

But the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew those charges on February 2, after key witnesses decided to withdraw their involvement.

Despite no longer facing charges, Greenwood remains suspended by Man United, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into whether the 22-year-old brought the Red Devils into disrepute and was in breach of his contract.

Meanwhile, Man United confirmed the departure of seven players, with defenders Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe among those leaving the club.

In addition to those two, Man United added: “Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard are seeking new opportunities elsewhere after loan spells at Salford City and Portsmouth, respectively. Both made their first-team debuts for United in a 2019 Europa League clash against Astana in Kazakhstan.

“Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens and Manni Norkett are leaving the Academy after the end of their current terms. The Academy is proud of all our departing young players and their achievements while at the club. They will all be supported in securing professional contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme, and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United.”
