Osita Izunaso, senator-elect for Imo-west senatorial
district, says he deserves to be the senate president as the most ranking
lawmaker from the south-east.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to allocate
leadership positions in the national assembly across the geo-political zones.
After the last elections, the party has the majority of the
soon-to-be sworn-in senators.
Izunaso, a former national organising secretary of the APC,
was first elected into the senate in 2007.
Before then, he was in the house of representatives.
Speaking with reporters after a meeting with President
Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Tuesday, the senator-elect said it would be fair
that the party zones the senate president position to south-east.
“We discussed the issues concerning the 10th senate
extensively,” he said.
“If I am the oldest
senator in both the South-east and the south-south, I think the question should
be obvious. I’m the oldest, there’s no senator today in APC, of Southeast or
South-south that’s older than me in the Senate and that’s an institution that
believes in ranking.
“So I’m the highest ranking senator in both the south-east
and south-south.
“I came to the Senate in 2007, I was in the house of
representatives, I’ve been in the party for five good, solid years. I ran the
party to the best of my ability as national organising secretary of this party
that saw us to victory in 2015 and 2019, so I think we have paid our dues.”
