Sixteen persons were killed on Friday in an accident along
the Ode-Omu highway of Osun state.
The state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)
said the accident involved a Mazda commercial vehicle and a Lexus jeep.
Henry Benamesia, the sector commander, confirmed the
incident in an interview with NAN on Saturday.
Benamesia said the accident occurred at 6pm around the Mat-Oil area of the highway.
He said the accident was caused by excessive speed and lack
of adherence to traffic regulations by the two drivers involved.
The sector commander said the deceased, comprising 11 adults
and five children, were burnt beyond recognition.
He said their remains have been deposited at the morgue at
Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo.
Benamesia said the wreckage has also been evacuated to
prevent traffic gridlock on the road.
He added that the FRSC rescue team, in collaboration with
other sister agencies, carried out the evacuation.
