Taraba community urges Gov Ishaku to respect court order

Stakeholders and elders of Gassol 1 Constituency in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, have called on the state governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, to, as a matter of urgency, respect the court order by suspending all actions on the creation of Kwararafa chiefdom and appointment of a new Chief of Kwararafa.

The governor, it would be recalled, had last Friday appointed a traditional ruler to preside over the affairs of the chiefdom despite a court order restraining him from such an act.

The appointment which did not go down well with the people, at the time of filing this report, was observed to have begun to ignite tensions in the community.

To prevent the people from taking the law into their hands, stakeholders and elders of the community, who on Saturday, expressed their sadness over the appointment via press briefing in Jalingo, said: “We do not only view this appointment as a gross contempt of court, but an abuse of the rule of law and a mockery of the judicial process.”

They felt sad that despite the court order, Ishaku, who is at the verge of leaving office, “wants to leave us with another crisis.”

The elders and stakeholders, who made their positions known through their spokesman, Hamman Tukur Kawu, further said: “Despite the court order, which we believed was served on the state government and the other defendants, we are shocked to hear that the state government flagrantly disobeyed the court order and went ahead to appoint one Methuselah E. Adamu as third class chief of Kwararafa on March 23, 2023.”

According to the Taraba State High Court order restraining the governor from creating or appointing a chief for Kwararafa chiefdom, the presiding Judge, Justice D.N. Buba, had, in his ruling, ordered the governor to “desist from appointing, installing, recognizing or coronating any person temporarily or permanently or otherwise as the substantive 3rd class chief of Kwararafa chiefdom.”

The people of the community alleged that Gov Ishaku’s plans are geared towards causing disaffection among the people of the community, the council and the state at large before bowing out of office in May.

While vowing to utilise all legitimate means to frustrate the governor’s “selfish aims,” they pleaded with the people of the community to distance themselves from acts capable of jeopardising the peace of the community.

“We, therefore, use this opportunity to call on the state governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, to respect the order of the court and suspend all actions on the creation of Kwararafa Chiefdom and appointment of a new Chief of Kwararafa,” they urged
