Following the unending scarcity of new naira notes and the attendant hardship on citizens, some Kaduna residents have taken to begging on the street.
Neatly dressed young ladies and men between 29 and 35 years old are now seen at various popular joints and traffic lights begging for alms in the city of Kaduna.
According to our findings, these beggars, who gather in groups of twos and threes, target car owners and commuters on bikes.
They operate between 10 am and 2 pm and disappeared only to appear again between 6:30 pm and 10 pm.
Some of the females looked married, and responsible, while others were seen with their babies.
One of them, Mrs Halima Abdullah told DAILY POST “it’s better to beg than to steal,” adding that she is facing serious hardship as a married woman because her husband is not working.
Also, a 36-year-old lady, Mrs Salamatu Abdullahi who stood in front of Barrau Diko Specialist Hosptial Kaduna, said as a mother of five children who lost her husband to kidnappers and who had no source of living, she chose to beg than engage in prostitution.
According to her, none of her neighbours is aware of her travails as she always leaves home well-dressed and only told her children she would soon be back.
When asked how much she realised from begging, she said: “Sometimes, if luck is by my side, I get between N2,000 and N3,500.”
She said some car owners sometimes mistake her for a prostitute.
“But I always explain my situation to whosoever cared to listen,” she said.
