Bassey Otu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress
(APC), in Cross River, has been declared the winner of the gubernatorial poll
in the state.
Teddy Charles, the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) returning officer in the state, said Otu polled 258,619 votes to defeat
Sandy Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 179,636.
Otu won in 15 of the
18 LGAs in the state.
Otu will succeed Ben Ayade, the incumbent governor.
Otu was a former house of representatives member from 2003 –
2011 where he represented the Calabar municipal/Odukpani constituency of Cross
River.
Running on the platform of the PDP, Otu was elected in 2011
as a senator and represented Cross River south in the red chamber.
While serving as a rep member, the 63-year-old Otu was the
chairman of the house committee on petroleum (upstream), vice chairman of house
committee on national population, and member of committees on power, ministry
of Niger Delta, inter-parliamentary relations, inter-intra party relations,
environment, water resources, and defense.
