Peter Obi, the
presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has replied to the comment by
Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, that he is a “Nollywood actor”.
In a recent
interview, el-Rufai had dismissed the chances of Obi winning the
presidential election.
“Peter Obi is a Nollywood actor and that’s all he will be.
This election is between the APC and PDP because they have the footprint; they
have the spread. Ethnicity and religious bigotry will not take you anywhere and
that’s what the Labour Party campaign is about,” he had said.
Speaking on an Arise TV programme on Sunday, Obi said the governor’s remark shows he recognises his potential to transform the entertainment industry if elected.
The LP presidential candidate said the entertainment sector
is one of the critical aspects of the economy he will focus on if elected
president.
He called on stakeholders in the industry to support his
presidential ambition.
“I thank El-Rufai for what he said, at least he gave me some
percentages; I’ll work hard to improve on that. The entertainment industry is
one of the engines that will develop us as a nation, I’ll focus on that and
Nollywood,” he said.
“And now that I’m an
acclaimed actor, I’m calling on all those in the entertainment industry,
including Nollywood, to support me.”
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) had earlier blasted el-Rufai
over his remark, arguing that such was “offensive and demeaning”.
