Obasanjo’s endorsement shows Obi is best candidate for presidency -Kenneth Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo, the presidential campaign spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP), has commended ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo for endorsing Peter Obi for president.

On Sunday, Obasanjo declared his support for Obi ahead of the general election, saying “he has an edge over others” in the presidential race.

His endorsement of the former Anambra governor has continued to stir mixed reactions in the political landscape.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Okonkwo hailed Obasanjo for refusing to keep silent in the face of a moral crisis in the country.

The actor-turned-politician said the ex-president’s endorsement of Obi showed he has the right qualities to become Nigeria’s next president.

“There is a saying that the greatest place in hell will be reserved for those who keep silent in times of moral crisis. Nigeria is going bad, not because of the violence of the bad people but the silence of the good ones,” he said.

“Obasanjo had refused to keep silent in times of moral crisis. We’re in a crisis in this country, Obasanjo wants to escape going to hell by being an accomplice to corrupt leaders because any nation that votes for corrupt politicians is no longer a victim but an accomplice.

“Obasanjo has never kept silent in times of moral crisis. He was even jailed because of it but he came out and became the president like you pointed out. Obasanjo knows everything that is required to occupy the presidential seat.

“In his letter, the ex-president said whoever wants to be president must meet four criteria which he summarised under the acronym TVCP –Track record of ability and performance; vision, character, and physical and mental ability. He is talking about the qualities that we need in the next president.

“Obasanjo saw in Peter Obi a man who has the capability to secure and unite this country… he did it in Anambra. He also saw a man who will shift emphasis on economy from consumption to production.”
