The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday said there is no doubt that Imo people are disenchanted with the electoral system, harping on the need for restitution and confidence-building.
The opposition party said Imo people need the political actors to explain to them why the governorship mandate which they overwhelmingly gave to their preferred candidate in 2019 was brutally truncated by the Supreme Court.
The party in a statement made available to newsmen by its Publicity Secretary in Imo State, Collins Opurozor, said the fear is that either their votes will not be counted or that their votes will not count.
While harping on the need to address the issue of voter apathy ahead of the 2023 general election, PDP said the state is at the lowest rung of the ladder in voter registration and PVC collection.
The release reads “It is a psychological problem. When people feel their votes can no longer make any difference or that the mandates that public officeholders parade are effectively dubious and unearned, the result is alienation, which now expresses itself in terms of low participation in voter registration and PVC collection.
”There is a need for restitution and confidence-building. This is the root cause of the apathy you are talking about.
“These views have been canvassed by a former INEC Federal Commissioner, Prof. Lai Olurode. Unfortunately, Senator Hope Uzodinma swiftly declared him wanted and charged security agencies to arrest him wherever he is sighted”
