Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has slammed security agencies in the country, accusing them of showing a great level of complacency in the incessant attacks on facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The group described as shameful the lack of arrest and prosecution of suspects of the attacks by about 20 security agencies in the country.
In a statement on Saturday, the National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said what is happening shows that President Muhammadu Buhari is not ready to give Nigerians a fair and free election come 2023.
The rights group alleged that the President has not shown any readiness to bequeath free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in 2023 as against his many promises.
INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu had recently said the upcoming general elections are in danger if the incessant attacks on the commission’s offices and facilities continue unabated.
The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, recently said that the attacks were being carried out by some unscrupulous individuals sponsored by politicians who want to ascend political power by all means.
But HURIWA insisted that the government of “Buhari is to be blamed for the continued attacks on INEC offices.
“The government has refused to arrest or even prosecute any of the suspected attackers let alone punish them through the courts to serve as deterrents to desperate and violent-inclined politicians.”
The group pointed out that the government has failed to stop non-state actors from moving around with sophisticated arms and weapons of mass destruction.
The rights advocacy group also berated the President for failing to sack the National Security Adviser, NSA, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Alkali Usman Baba, the Comptroller General of customs Services and the heads of the other security agencies who are not living up to the expectations of many Nigerians.
