World Cup: People have died – Man United’s Fernandes, Eriksen slam Qatar

Manchester United midfielders, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen, have slammed Qatar over human rights issues in the country.

Both men were in action for Manchester United in their 2-1 win against Fulham on Sunday, being their last game before the World Cup in Qatar

Fernandes and Eriksen have been named in their national teams, Portugal and Denmark’s squads respectively, and are key members of their teams.

They are not happy about the tournament being hosted in Qatar and Fernandes leading the way in making his feelings known on Sunday.

“It’s strange, it’s not exactly the time we want to be playing in the World Cup,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.

The midfielder is not also comfortable with the timing of the tournament which was shifted from June/July to November/December due to the weather in the host nation.

“We know the surroundings of the World Cup, what has been in the past few weeks and months, about the people who have died in the construction of the stadiums,” he added.

Fernandes, who is one of the leaders in the Portugal squad, said that football should bring happiness to all and everyone should be allowed to enjoy the game “because the World Cup is the world, it doesn’t matter who.”

“Eriksen added: ‘I totally agree with Bruno. It’s been written a lot and a lot of focus on how the World Cup has happened and why it’s in Qatar, I think everyone agrees it hasn’t gone the right way.”
