Chelsea legend John Terry has said that Gareth Southgate’s decision to dump Phil Foden on the bench during England’s goalless draw with the USA at the ongoing World Cup is beyond him.
The former England captain was baffled by what he described as Southgate’s “negativity” during the boring draw against the USA.
England were poor against the USA on Friday after beating Iran 6-2 in their first game on Monday.
Much of the post-match criticism of Southgate has centred on his reluctance to play Phil Foden, who has been described as England’s best player in Qatar.
Terry, a former Chelsea captain, said Southgate has refused to learn the lessons from previous tournaments.
He told beIN Sport: “Disappointed with some of the tactical changes they were very negative from our point of view.
“We’ve spoken about Gareth, and he can learn from his mistakes previously. For me, personally, I would have done things differently; how we’ve not seen Foden on the pitch is beyond me.
‘He’s one of our best talents, and I’d love to see him on the pitch.”
