As the Nigerian government commemorates the nation’s 62nd
independence day anniversary, tight security arrangements were observed in and
around the vicinity of Eagle Square in Abuja.
The event which officially kicked off at 10:14am following
the arrival of President, Muhammadu Buhari and other top government
functionaries had the presence of security forces drawn from the Nigerian
Police, Army, Airforce, DSS, Navy Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps
NSCDC among others.
The President kicked off the event with an inspection of
guards, before proceeding to the VIP stand to observe the parade processions.
The colourful march parade was spearheaded by the Army,
followed by the Navy, Airforce and the Police.
Other para-military agencies that also performed the parade
include the prison service, customs, immigration, fire service, road safety
corps, Nigerian legion, and National Youth Service Corps members.
Our correspondent observed that all roads linking the
federal secretariat complex were cordoned off by security personnel.
The President had earlier addressed Nigerians on the
occasion of the independence anniversary where he said he shared in the pains
Nigerians were going through while commending their resilience in the face of
challenges.
Buhari had also commended Nigerians for giving him the
opportunity to lead the country both in 2015 and 2019, adding that he had
delivered on most of the promises he made to the people in the last seven
years.
