Rishi Sunak has been elected as the new leader of the
Conservative Party and will now be named the UK prime minister.
He was announced as the new leader of the UK in a tweet on
the Conservatives’ Twitter handle on Monday.
The former Chancellor of the Exchequer got the leadership of
the conservative party after Penny Mordaunt failed to get enough backing from
fellow members of the parliament to enter the ballot.
Boris Johnson, former prime minister, also withdrew from the
race, saying the “timing is not right”.
Sunak takes the position just days after Liz Truss bowed out
after 45 days in office. Truss resigned following heavy criticism of her
economic policies.
The development makes Sunak UK’s third prime minister in two
months.
The 42-year-old has an Indian origin following his family
migration to Britain in the 1960s.
Sunak entered into the UK’s public consciousness after he
was appointed the chief secretary of the treasury by Johnson in 2019.
The former financial analyst is expected to enforce
stability within the Conservative Party and Britain at large to arrest its
plunge into political and economic problems.
He would be expected to launch deep spending cuts and tackle
rising energy and food bills.
