Why court must not force us to call off strike – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said any verdict of the Industrial Court that forces lecturers back to school will have a negative impact.

The President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osadeke, while meeting with the leadership of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, said if lecturers are forced to school, what kind of education are they expecting students to get?

It would be recalled that the federal government dragged ASUU to the National Industrial Court over the seven months ASUU strike.

Justice Polycarp Hamman had on Monday adjourned the case after listening to the arguments of the counsel on behalf of the parties. The court is expected to reconvene on Wednesday.

Speaking before the closed-door session, Mr. Osadeke said forcing lecturers back to school is like forcing doctors to treat patients.

“If the court forces the lecturers to go to work tomorrow, which type of teaching will they do? If the court forces the Nigerian academics — say go and teach against your will — just like the court forcing a doctor to go and treat a patient against your will, how many of us will go and meet that doctor.”

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila had stated that the meeting must produce a resolution that will end the strike.
