The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Aminu Tambuwal,
governor of Sokoto, has not resigned as the chairman of the PDP governors
forum.
Earlier on Thursday, there were reports that Tambuwal had
resigned and Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, was now the new chairman of the
forum.
But in a statement, C.I.D. Maduabum, director-general of the
forum, said Tambuwal will continue in his position while the party works
towards resolving its crisis.
“This is to inform the general public and stakeholders of
the Peoples Democratic Party that the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party
Governors Forum (PDP-GF), Rt Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, has not resigned
as Chairman of the Forum contrary to some media reports,” the statement reads.
“Members of the PDP Governors Forum are working behind the
scenes to resolve all contending issues concerning the Party.
“To this end a meeting of the Forum will soon be convened.”
Meanwhile, the development comes hours after the PDP passed
several resolutions after its national executive committee (NEC) meeting in
Abuja on Thursday.
Among the resolutions was a vote of confidence in Iyorchia
Ayu, PDP national chairman, despite calls for his resignation.
Among persons asking Ayu to resign is Nyesom Wike, governor
of Rivers, on the grounds that the national chairman and presidential candidate
cannot be from the same region.
However, the national chairman had dismissed the calls,
describing those pushing it as “children”.
Meanwhile, as part of efforts to resolve the crisis, Walid
Jibrin has resigned as the chairman of the board of trustees (BoT) of PDP.
But Wike had dismissed Jibrin’s resignation, adding that
Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, had told him a southerner
would become PDP chairman after the presidential primary in May.
