Adolphus Wabara, former senate president, has been named the
new chairman of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The announcement was made at a meeting of the PDP BoT which
was held on Thursday at the opposition party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Wabara takes over from Walid Jibrin, who had earlier stepped
down as the BoT chairman.
Announcing his resignation, Jibrin said his decision was in
the interest of unity in the party.
Recently, there have been protests about the regional
lopsidedness in the major opposition party.
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the party, is
from Adamawa (north-east); Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the party, is
from Benue (north-central); and Jibrin hails from Nasarawa (north-central).
Members of the party, especially those in the camp of Nyesom
Wike, governor of Rivers, have demanded the resignation of Ayu.
However, despite calls for his resignation, the national
chairman has stayed put, saying that those who want him out of office “are
children”.
The PDP BoT meeting is also expected to take a decision on
the demand for Ayu’s resignation.
