The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has
discovered a laboratory used for the production of methamphetamine in Victoria
Garden City (VGC), Lagos.
NDLEA officials were said to have busted the laboratory
domiciled at K-5A/2, Road 14, VGC, on Saturday.
The development was disclosed in an internal security
incident memo signed by Yusuff Morufat, general manager of Victoria Garden City
Property Owners and Residents Association (VGCPORA).
According to Morufat, the apartment in question is occupied by Emeka Nzewi, a tenant who had been wanted by NDLEA since 2017.
The general manager said Nzewi and his accomplices have been
arrested by the NDLEA, while the property will be sealed by the Lagos state
government.
“On Saturday July 30 2022 at about 15:10hrs, officials of
the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) carried out a sting operation
in K-SA/2 Road 14 based on intelligence gathering. The property is occupied by
a tenant. Mr. & Mrs. Emeka Nzewi,” the memo reads.
“The operation confirmed a meth lab operation in the
premises. Mr. Emeka Nzewi and accomplices have been arrested while the property
will be sealed by the state government.”
Morufat said NDLEA officials disclosed that all boreholes
and water bodies within 500 metres of the said property have been contaminated.
The general manager said the estate association in
conjunction with NDLEA will conduct a test of water samples around the affected
area.
“NDLEA had been in trace of Mr. Emeka Nzewi since 2017,” the
memo reads.
“Property owners do not conduct background checks of tenants
before lease of properties.
“Such an act exposes
other residents to security risk. Henceforth, VGCPORA will make background
checks mandatory for new residents before access cards will be issued or
renewed for existing residents.
“The act of Mr. Emeka Nzewi has exposed all occupants of
properties around Road 14 to hazardous meth lab chemicals used and waste
generated from production.
“According to the NDLEA Officials, all boreholes, water
supply and plants 500 meters away from K-5A/2 Road 14 have been contaminated.
Therefore, VGCPORA in conjunction with NDLEA will conduct test of water supply
to properties around K-SA/2 Road 14.”
