You had opportunity to restructure, create State police – Presidency hits back at Obasanjo

The Buhari Presidency, through the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, has questioned former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s call for State police and restructuring of the country.

Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Adesina, took a swipe at Obasanjo over the former President’s belief that the security challenges across the country were being poorly handled.

Obasanjo had on Wednesday suggested that the creation of State police would be a better option than community policing to help fight insecurity in the country.

However, the suggestion seemed not to have gone down well with Adesina, who criticized Obasanjo and insisted that when the ex-President had the opportunity to do what he is asking for now, but he failed to do it.

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has a right to hold a different opinion from what he held in the past but I recall that under him, restructuring of the federation was a key issue that Afenifere fought for, and then there was the issue of State police which also resonated loudly under him but he didn’t do anything in eight years.

“Like I said, he has a right to change his mind now, but it doesn’t change the fact that he had the opportunity to do something about it and did not,” he said.

Adesina further explained the major obstacle of President Buhari’s execution of the restructuring, saying that “the executive is not the custodian of political will.”
