President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday met with Abdullahi
Adamu, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Mai Mala
Buni, Yobe state governor.
The meeting took place at the presidential villa in Abuja.
The ruling party is preparing for its primary elections
ahead of the 2023 poll.
On March 26, the APC held its national convention where it elected new national working committee (NWC) members.
Before the convention, Buni was chairman of a national
caretaker committee of the party for almost two years.
The Yobe governor took over the reins of power after a
leadership crisis rocked the party in June 2020.
In an effort to find a solution to the crisis, the party’s
national executive committee (NEC) dissolved the NWC led by Adams Oshiomhole,
the former chairman.
Speaking during the visit of Adamu and Buni to the state
house, the president said the ruling party has “nursed its wounds and healed
itself”.
“Today, we should all be happy that the party has nursed its
wounds and healed itself sufficiently to march forward to face the challenges
of the coming state and general elections,” he said.
“When I reflect on policies of the administration on the
economy and specifically in the development of agriculture, infrastructure, ICT
and innovation and the welfare measures we have put in place for women, the
youth and the less privileged members of the society, I get fresh confidence
that our citizens will continue supporting the APC in our electoral battles.
“Our government is working for the betterment of the country.
Our policies and programmes aim at nothing but the betterment of the country
and its people. Essentially, the party should take the programmes of the
government to the people to infuse confidence into them.”
The president thanked the Buni-led caretaker committee for
the conduct of the party’s congresses and convention, urging the new chairman
to be fair and firm in his dealings.
