Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed
what former President Olusegun Obasanjo told him when he led Nigeria to clash
with the Black Stars of Ghana in a World Cup qualifier back in 2001.
Oliseh was the captain of the Super Eagles when Nigeria and
Ghana last met in a World Cup qualifier at the Liberation Stadium in Port
Harcourt.
The match ended in a 3-0 win in favour of Nigeria, thanks to
Tijani Babangida’s brace and a strike from Victor Agali.
The Super Eagles became the fifth African team to qualify
for the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals in Japan and Korea after beating the Black
Stars.
However, Oliseh has now revealed that Obasanjo told him
prior to the match that he can see that captaining this great country [Nigeria]
is not easy, adding that it is like ruling it.
He said that Obasanjo told him that he must win the match.
Oliseh disclosed this in a tweet via his Twitter handle on
Wednesday.
“I will always remember what President Obasanjo said to me
as I led Nigeria out for this game..” Oliseh, you can see captaining this great
country is not easy, like it is Ruling it, You must win this match “… Great
Memories & Naija forever,” Olise tweeted alongside the highlight of the
video of Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Ghana.
This is coming ahead of Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup
playoff against Ghana.
Nigeria will face Ghana in Kumasi on Friday.
Austin Eguavoen’s men will then host Ghana in the return leg
in Abuja on Tuesday.
