Four days after Nigeria played out a 0-0 draw with Ghana, the two teams will meet again in the second leg of their 2022 World Cup playoff.
The first leg was played at the intimidating Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
The Super Eagles marched out to a fully packed venue, as their hosts tried to unsettle the three-time African champions and claim a result at home.
Ghana started the game brightly, backed by a vociferous crowd, but created little chances to breach the Nigerians’ defence. Francis Uzoho had only one shot of note to palm away.
However, the Eagles had two big chances to leave Kumasi with an advantage. First, Moses Simon hit his shot straight at the goalkeeper, while Frank Onyeka opted to cross rather than pass to a free Dennis Emmanuel.
So, unto the reverse fixture at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Nigeria will only qualify for Qatar 2022 with a win. Even a draw will see Ghana get one of five tickets to represent the continent.
This means that Augustine Eguavoen has to come correct with his tactics. Ever since the 1-0 defeat to Tunisia at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, ‘Cerezo’ has seen his tactical acumen and setup criticized.
The time to shut his critics up has come.
Eguavoen must set up the Eagles to score and not concede if they must be at the World Cup this year. Every goal the Black Star score, mean the Nigerians have to score more.
It is make or mar. 90 minutes stand between the West African rivals and Qatar. And four years of vicious banter on social media. Yes, this is also about bragging rights.
So, who takes it all? Kick off is 6pm (WAT) on Tuesday.
