The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alerted members of
the public that all routes to the Eagle Square, Abuja will be closed for its
national convention on Saturday.
The APC national convention has been slated for Saturday at
the Eagle Square, federal capital territory (FCT).
The national convention is an avenue for the party to elect
executives who will pilot the affairs of the party at the national level.
“The general public should be notified that all routes to Eagle
Square, the venue of the APC national convention will not be accessible by
23:59hrs on Friday 25th March 2022,” the party said.
Over the past few weeks, the ruling APC has faced several
issues — political and legal — that have threatened the conduct of the March 26
national convention.
But it appears the party has put some of the issues to rest.
Some weeks ago, reports emanated that Mai Mala Buni-led
caretaker committee was working to scuttle the APC national convention.
The development led to the emergence of Abubakar Sani Bello,
governor of Niger, as the acting chairman of the APC.
However, Buni took over the party’s leadership when he
returned to the country from abroad, while asking party members to shun actions
capable of hindering the party’s success.
Members of the party are said to be having a disagreement
over President Muhammadu Buhari’s consensus arrangement for the national
convention. There is the speculation that some aspirants are not in support of
the consensus arrangement.
On issues arising from section 84(12) of the Electoral Act,
2022, the caretaker extraordinary convention planning committee of the APC, on
Thursday, announced that political appointees elected as delegates will not be
allowed to vote during the convention.
