It’s no secret that the Nigerian Super Eagles were boasted to be one of the top favorites to take the 2021 AFCON Title, especially if you look at any of the top sports betting sites, even those that are fully focused right now on bringing the top American Super Bowl lines, yet now, after being ousted by Tunisia, the Super Eagles have had to turn the page and almost immediately start to think about their upcoming fixture against rival African powerhouse Ghana for a spot in the Qatar 2022 World Cup Tournament.
While many have played the blame game against each other for the debacle in the AFCON tournament, at the end of the day there is no real reason to cry over spoiled milk and with Nigeria facing one of its toughest challenges up to date, the question now lies in, what do the Super Eagles need to beat Ghana and qualify for Qatar 2022? Let’s take a look.
First And Foremost, Focus Needs To Be Shifted Over
Yes, Nigeria was seen as one of the teams to beat in the 2021 AFCON Tournament, and with ample reason. The roster was stacked, the level of playing was at a very promising level and all signs were pointing towards the Super Eagles going for a title run in Cameroon, but then Tunisia stepped in their way and invited them out of the tournament. This of course was met with shock and disgust by fans and Nigerian football experts, especially taking into account the performance against Tunisia in the 1-0 losing effort.
In all honesty, Nigeria had much more to five in the tournament, I think all Super Eagles fans can agree on that much, but for now, what’s left is to do the right thing turn the page, and start to shift the focus towards what’s to come, facing Ghana in march for a sport in Qatar 2022. Nigeria will have to put asides any differences, as well as adjust to what the new coach and his staff will bring to the table to get past a Ghana team that is known for being one of the toughest opponents in the African continent. With that said, if all of Nigeria´s top players prepare themselves accordingly for what’s to come and play at their best level, the advantage will go to the Super Eagles.
Jose Peseiro Will Need All The Support From Everyone Involved
When officially appointed, head coach Portuguese Jose Peseiro will not have it easy whatsoever when he finally takes over the coaching job for the Super Eagles. But with that said, if there was ever a man to take the job and feel like he could be a stand-up candidate to turn the Nigerian boat around and sail it into Qatar 2022 it's him. His expertise in Nigerian football is one of the main selling points that made Peseiro the best-qualified candidate for the job. Peseiro is no stranger to African football as well, with a stint with Egyptian club Al-Ahly, considered by many as the most successful football club in all of Africa.
Peseiro brings a bounty of knowledge and experience after having had worked in some of Europe´s top clubs such as his stint as an assistant at Real Madrid when his fellow countryman Carlos Queiroz was at the helm, as well as also having coached Portuguese giants Porto. Now what’s left is to have Peseiro come in and work alongside his staff to try and put together a proper strategy and game plan for Nigeria to face Ghana and come out successfully. On a positive note, Peseiro will count on a vast array of some of Nigeria’s top football talents to work with, with the likes of Maduka Okoye, Ola Aina, Zaidu Sanusi, Wilfred Ndidi, Joe Aribo, Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen, Ahmed Musa and Paul Onuachu all looking to leave it all on the line for the Super Eagles as they once again try to make their way into a FIFA World Cup Tournament, this time with the sole focus of trying to get past the group stages and into the knockout rounds. If Nigeria’s great generation of players, which offer a perfect mix and balance of youth, explosiveness, and veteran savviness can come together under Peseiro’s guide and play the football Nigeria is best known for, then Super Eagles fans will be in for a treat.
