The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has
fixed August 18 as the final deadline for the submission of nomination forms
for governorship candidates.
This was announced by Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, on
Saturday at a media briefing in Abuja.
While giving a breakdown of the schedule of activities for
the 2023 general election, he said the presidential and national assembly
elections will be conducted on February 25, 2023, while governorship and state
assembly elections will hold on March 11, 2023.
According to INEC, collection of forms for persons
interested in contesting in the general election will begin on March 1, 2022.
Also, political parties are expected to have submitted
nomination forms for their presidential and national assembly candidates by
August 8.
The commission said it had earlier fixed February 18 for the
presidential election, but that the date had to be shifted following the
signing of the electoral act amendment bill into law by President Muhammadu
Buhari on Friday.
INEC also said the official register of voters for the
general election will be published by the commission on January 12, 2023.
