Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, says the National
Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of two additional
universities in the state.
According to NAN, the governor spoke on Tuesday at the
public presentation of a book in honour of Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, vice-chancellor
(VC) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The book is titled: ‘Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe @60;
Audacity of Resilience’.
Sanwo-Olu described the NUC’s decision as timely, adding
that such will expand access to the teeming youth who crave higher education.
He added that the two existing universities in the state
were not enough to accommodate the growing number of youths.
Sanwo-Olu said education remains the only potent weapon to
eradicate poverty and breach all limitations.
He also disclosed that the Lagos State Polytechnic
(LASPOTECH), Ikorodu would henceforth become the University of Science and
Technology, while Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education would now merge with
Michael Otedola College of Primary Education and upgraded as the University of
Education.
Speaking on the book, the governor described the literary
work as a must-read for current and aspiring leaders.
Sanwo-Olu said the book details how education, tenacity, and
focus conquered limitations. He also lauded Ogundipe for his strides in UNILAG.
“For our young ones that are seated here, this book should
inspire you to break all bounds and reach out to your goals in life. Do not
allow what you face today to limit your aspiration in life,” he said.
The governor promised that the state government would
acquire a lot of the books for its schools including the Lagos State University
(LASU).
Martins Oloja, managing director/editor-in-chief of the
Guardian newspaper, who reviewed the book, said the work is in five parts.
He added that it comprises 340 pages with 16 chapters.
