A 2023 presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, has commended
President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government for lifting the ban on
Twitter.
Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Leader,
however, noted that Twitter and all social media platforms are misused by some
Nigerians.
In a series of tweets, the former Lagos State Governor
wrote: “Social media – indeed all media – including Twitter, are a means for us
to all communicate, report, share and engage with stories and each other; to
enable economic and social empowerment for Nigerians. But they can be and
sometime are misused.
“I commend the FG for recognising these aspects and most importantly, concluding negotiations for the safe return of access to Twitter to the millions of Nigerians who use it, daily. Welcome back one and all!” [sic].
The Nigerian government had seven months ago suspended
Twitter operations in Nigeria.
The government had explained that the micro-blogging site
was suspended because it posed a threat to Nigeria’s unity.
However, the government reversed its decision, thereby,
allowing Nigerians access to the platform on Wednesday, January 12, 2021.
