Former Presidential candidate and chieftain of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Professor George Moghalu has expressed sadness over the passing of the presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC), Bashir Othman Tofa.
It was reported that Tofa was MKO Abiola’s major challenger in the controversial June 12, 1993, presidential election, annulled by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida.
According to family sources, he died in the early hours of Monday after an illness.
Reacting in a statement forwarded to newsmen on Tuesday, Professor Moghalu, who was also an ex-Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), described the demise of the prominent politician as a big loss.
He also described the deceased Bashir Tofa, as a good man and philanthropist
Moghalu further condoled the Tofa family and the people of Kano State on the passage of the frontline Kano politician, praying almighty God to grant his soul eternal rest.
He stated, “Very saddened by the death of Bashir Tofa in Kano.
“The former Presidential Candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC), with the economist Dr. Sylvester Ugo as his running mate, lost the 1993 election to MKO Abiola.
“Tofa was a businessman and philanthropist.
“He was a good man and his death is a big loss. May his soul rest in peace.
“My condolences to his dear family and the people of Kano State.
“Here we were at dinner in Abuja celebrating the 60th birthday of Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II in August 2021”.
