Veteran journalists under the auspices of the League of Veteran Journalists (LVJ) in Oyo State have said the association is disturbed by the incidents of fake news across the country.
Chairman of the association, Mr. Banji Ogundele made this disclosure while speaking at the veterans day programme organised by the Oyo State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Thursday.
Our correspondent reports that the programme was part of the activities for the 2021 Press Week.
Ogundele, who advocated regulation of the media industry, noted that this is necessary to reduce the incidents of fake news in the country.
He tasked the NUJ to take drastic steps to reduce the menace of fake news in the country.
“We are worried about the cases of fake news.
“We are the only profession that anyone can just jump and join.
“What can the NUJ do? Maybe with the collaboration with veterans to curb these incidents of fake news.
“People will ask us what we are doing to eradicate the incidents of fake news.
“I am charging you the NUJ chairman to take it to the national level that there is a need to regulate the media.
“It is a challenge to all of us”.
