Former special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on
prosecution, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla has accused governors of being meddlesome.
He said they were attempting to usurp the functions of the
National Assembly and disrespect the President.
In a statement, Obono-Obla wondered why governors were
lobbying President Buhari not to sign into law the Electoral Repeal and
Re-Enactment Bill, 2021.
“The governors should realise that it is unconstitutional
for them to meddle into the province of law-making, which is the exclusive
preserve of the National Assembly.
“It is also disrespectful of them to tell the President what
to do. The President has never meddled or interfered with what the governors do
in their States. Why are the governors so opposed to reforms the President
initiates always?” He asked.
He also wondered what the governors are actually looking
for, recalling that the President issued executive orders granting financial
autonomy to the judiciary, legislature and local governments, yet the governors
vehemently opposed it.
He also recalled that the Nigerian Financial Intelligence
Unit issued a regulation to stop money laundering concerning allocations from
the federation accounts to local government councils, and the governors went to
court to oppose it.
He said the Nigerian constitution has delineated the
functions of the three branches of government, namely the executive,
legislature, and judiciary, and also spelt out the functions and powers of the
Governors of the 36 States.
