Imo lawmakers move against drug abuse


Imo State House of Assembly lawmakers has moved against drug abuse in the state, describing it as an impediment to the development of the state.


This move was made during the resumption of the plenary session under Speaker, Kennedy Ibeh after a motion was presented by Innocent Arthur Egwim to curb the menace of drugs especially “Mkpuru mmiri” consumption among Imo State youths.


The chief sponsor of the bill, who is the lawmaker, representing Ideato North said the hard drug intake poses a threat in the state, stressing that after consumption youths carry out immoral behaviours in the society.


Egwim said the bill would also curb the menace of “Mkpuru mmiri” consumption among Imo State youths.


The member representing Njaba state constituency, Uju Onwudiwe seconded the motion, while the Deputy Speaker, Amarachi Iwuanyanwu, Ngozi Ngozi S M Obiefule (Isu), Chigozie Nwaneri,(Oru East), Uche Ogbuagu,(Ikeduru), among other members, supported the motion.


IMHA lawmakers suggested that the State Ministry of Health should run a media campaign against the intake of the said drug.


The house agreed during a vote to urge the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma to reconstitute a State committee that will work in tandem with NDLEA and establish State rehabilitation centres.


The lawmakers also directed the Ministry of Health to educate the youths against the use of illicit drugs.


The House has now resolved to have an interface with the State Commandant NDLEA, Police Commissioner and Commissioner for Health, to know efforts put in place to curb the menace of drugs in the state.
