The Nigerian Army has rebuked reports of soldiers escorting
buses filled with fake voters.
Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director, Army Public Relations
said the video making the rounds was fabricated, baseless, and the handiwork of
mischief makers.
Nwachukwu explained that the buses were conveying staff
members of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and not fake
voters as purported in the viral video.
In a statement he signed, Nwachukwu said the viral video was
aimed at discrediting the reputation and questioning the apolitical stance of
the Army in the Saturday’s governorship election.
The statement reads: “The mischief makers, using the social
media, shared a video alleging that soldiers were escorting buses filled with
fake voters into Anambra State.
“Even though such despicable propaganda images can easily be
punctured by any keen observer, however for the sake of posterity, we wish to
state without any equivocation, that no soldier of the Nigerian Army indulged
in escorting fake voters into Anambra State.
“Contrary to the misleading information, the buses in
question were conveying INEC permanent and adhoc staff for the election tasks
in Anambra State.”
Nwachukwu assured residents of Anambra State of a peaceful
environment during the conduct of the election.
