Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom said there was nothing to
celebrate about Nigeria at 61, given the worst incidences of insecurity in the
nation under President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
The governor gave his verdict that at home, it’s about
sycophancy and in Nigeria’s forests, terrorists and bandits reigns supreme with
killing and wanton destruction of lives and properties, coupled with bad
economic policies that has grounded the economy, hence there was nothing to
celebrate
Ortom stated this during an Interdenominational Church Service held at the Chapel of Grace, Benue Government House to mark 61st Independence Anniversary celebrations.
He said “We have nothing to celebrate. What are we
celebrating, bandits, kidnappers, herdsmen, insurgents, failed economy or what?
“Look at the economy the Naira is almost N600 to the Dollar
today. The truth is that we have nothing to celebrate as a people because we
the leaders have failed this country.
He lamented that mediocres and sycophants have taken over
and there was nothing positive happening in any aspect of the economy, apart
from lives of Nigerians that was spared which the citizens should thank God.
He revealed that over 100 security operatives were killed by
Fulani Herdsmen turned bandits in the course of securing lives and properties
in Benue State between 2017 till date.
According to him attack on security agents was not peculiar
in Benue, but it’s rampant across the country was indicative that insecurity
was a huge challenge to the Federal government.
The governor condemned attack on security agents who risked
their lives to protect citizens, saying that they also have families and blood
runs in their veins too.
“This is certainly not the kind of country our founding
fathers wished for us. But we must keep fate in our country Nigeria, because it
is God that brought us together in the mist of our diversity.
“We know that their are mischief makers all over the place
but we must not be provoked because two wrongs cannot make a right. We cannot
say because there is impunity going on, we must be involved in such.
“Let us work with God to give us a new direction because
there will be light at the end of tunnel. Nigeria will be out of this situation
someday. So lets trust God to deliver us. Lets have the faith of Daniel who was
delivered by God from the lion’s den.”
He called for prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari and
other leaders in the country for them to be guided by God.
