Antony Blinken, United States
Secretary of State, has extended best wishes to the people of Nigeria on the
61st anniversary of their independence.
Blinken said the United States
Government would continue to support Nigeria’s efforts to counter terrorism, insecurity
and improve health systems.
He said the strong partnership
between both countries is based on a common commitment to democracy, diversity,
and a shared spirit of entrepreneurship.
This was contained in a statement
issued by Temitayo Famutimi, the Information Specialist Public Affairs Section
(PAS) U.S. Consulate General, on Friday.
The statement read in part, “As
your partner, we’ll continue to support Nigerian efforts to counter terrorism
and insecurity, improve health systems, strengthen democratic institutions,
promote respect for human rights, and bolster economic growth, including
through bilateral trade and investment.
“We value Nigerian leadership on
issues including African peace and security, ending the COVID-19 pandemic and
building back a more inclusive economy, and reducing greenhouse emissions and
creating a clean energy future.
“The United States looks forward
to expanding our relationship over the coming year and advancing our mutual
interests.”
Meanwhile, President, Muhammadu Buhari,
has restated his commitment to ensuring that Nigeria remains united despite
agitations for secession in some parts of the country.
This was contained in a speech he
delivered on Thursday night at the closing edition of the Nigeria@60
celebration at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
In the speech, President Buhari
promised that his government will continue to offer the enabling environment
for Nigerians to achieve their dreams “while we count on their support to make
Nigeria a better place for all”.
