Senator Dino Melaye who represented the Kogi West Senatorial
district during the 8th National Assembly has claimed that Nigeria is now the
capital of poverty in the entire world.
This was contained in a statement he signed and made
available to journalists on Friday as part of activities to mark the 2021
Independence Day.
The former lawmaker lamented the level of hardship currently
bedevilling citizens of the country, saying the evidence of independence cannot
be felt by most Nigerians.
Dino said Nigeria is only celebrating abject poverty,
economic stagnation and ethno-religion bigotry
“I join Nigerians all over the world to celebrate the 61st
Independence Anniversary of our great nation, Nigeria. As Nigeria mark its 61
years of freedom, it is an opportunity to reflect on our progress, celebrate
our humble attainments and brood over those dreams that we are yet to fulfil as
a nation.
“I can’t help but ask, how is Nigeria doing @ 61? It is with
tears in my eyes that I say that Nigeria as a nation @ 61 is not doing well.
Nigeria has wriggled through numerous economic and other challenges, with
inflation and unemployment currently at their worse level today.
“Our dear nation @ 61 has turned into an unenviable poverty
capital of the world, where over 82.9 million Nigerians can no longer afford
daily meals and other necessities of life. Let the truth be told, the true
meaning of independence is yet to be fully felt in all aspects of our lives as
Nigerians”, he said.
Senator Dino Melaye called on all Nigerians to pray for the
country to ensure that the dream of the founding fathers, who paid the price
for the nation’s independence is not dashed.
He said, “However, the above should not discourage our
commitment and hope for a better Nigeria, the Nigeria of our dreams.
”I, therefore, call on all well-meaning Nigerians to pray
for our dear country. So that the vision and dreams of our founding fathers to
build a truly egalitarian society where love, peace, freedom and justice reigns
will be achieved. God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
