The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday, said
Nigerians have lost confidence in the presidency, leading to the current
agitation for secession in both the Southeast and Southwest geopolitical zones.
Governor Ortom, who is known for criticising President
Muhammadu Buhari over his alleged inability to tackle the current security
challenges, made the assertion during an event organized by the Radio Nigeria
chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in Enugu State.
The governor revealed that the lack of fairness to Nigerians
by the Buhari administration birthed the agitation for separation which is
currently going on in some parts of the country.
Ortom said, “as you are aware, youth restiveness, herdsmen
attacks, banditry and other criminal activities have had a negative impact on
the socio-economic life of the country and are also fueling ethnic tensions.
“As I stated earlier, the current secessionist agitations
here in the East and elsewhere are a result of injustice and lack of fairness
to Nigerians by the current Presidency.
“This is why there is a growing perception that the Federal
Government is encouraging the murderous activities of Fulani herdsmen by its
actions and inaction.
“From all indications, the public trust in the Presidency
has been eroded. This does not speak well for the corporate existence of
Nigeria”.
While the proscribed Indigenous
People of Biafra, IPOB are agitating for the separation of the Southeast from
Nigeria over alleged marginalization, some secessionists in the Southwest are
also moving for the actualization of the Oduduwa Republic, a sovereign state
for the Yoruba nation.
