Team Nigeria have dropped from 64th position to 68th on the
medals table as Tokyo 2020 Olympics
events enter Day 12.
This is as no Nigerian athlete qualified for finals in
Wednesday’s events.
In the events that had their finals today, no Nigerian
qualified.
Nigeria medal hopeful in wrestling Odunayo Adekuoroye lost
her 57kg weight category fight.
She was defeated by fall by Anastasia Nichita of Moldova in
a swift turn of events.
The Nigerian was leading 8-2 before Nichita won through a
pin in the round of 16.
Also, Nigeria’s wrestler Ekerekeme Agiomor failed to
progress to the semis.
On her part, Nigeria’s Ayomide Bello finished third in the
Heat 3 of the Women’s Canoe Single 200m.
However, she missed out on an automatic semi-finals spot.
Nigeria currently have two medals – Silver and bronze.
While Ese Brume won the bronze for Nigeria, Blessing
Obodururu secured the silver medal.
Brume recorded a 6.97 metres jump in the final of the event
at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium to win her first Olympic medal and Nigeria’s first
at this Games.
Oborududu had to settle for the silver medal in the women’s
freestyle 68kg event on Tuesday in the Tokyo Olympics wrestling competition in
Tokyo.
The medal was Nigeria’s first one ever in the wrestling
sport since the country’s first-ever appearance at the Olympics in 1952.
China retain their lead on the medals table with 32 gold,
followed by the United States, 25; Japan, 21; and Great Britain 15.
