Chimamanda Adichie, Nigerian novelist-cum-feminist, has
demanded justice for the murder of Usifo Ataga, late Super TV CEO.
The author, in a statement, reminisced on the events of
Ataga’s funeral.
Usifo was stabbed to death and left in the pool of his own
blood inside a short let Lagos apartment on June 15.
Chidinma Ojukwu, a student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was arrested in connection with the case.
Speaking on the murder, Chimamanda wrote: “My sister-in-law
has been Usifo Ataga’s friend since their days in Federal Government College,
Warri. It was she who first told me that he was brutally murdered.
“There was the elder brother, broken by grief, who in the
middle of a vote of thanks was interrupted by his own painful sobs. The younger
sister fragile with her stifled grief.
“The friend Rotimi swirling in a mix of shock and pain,
pointing at Usifo’s photo. The friend Onochie walking too slowly to the podium,
as though reluctant to give a tribute, as though afraid that doing so would
finally make it true.
“The cousin Frank still speaking of Usifo in the present
tense.
His wife, sad and silent, wrapped in black, and in her written tribute the
heartrending words.
“It is easy to forget in the scramble for clicks, in the
frenzied spreading of rumours, in the hunger for the salacious and the
outrageous, that actual human beings are involved.
“That this is a person who was loved by many people,
including two daughters who now will be scarred for life. May
justice be served. May his murderers be brought to justice.”
