Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, has moved to evacuate
students of Abia origin over insecurity challenges in Plateau State.
Ikpeazu, however, dispatched a team led by his Special
Assistant on Students Affairs, Mr Chibuzo Ndom, to the University of Jos, Plateau
State, to evacuate Abia students who are currently stranded as a result of the
recent violence and subsequent closure of the institution.
This was disclosed in a release by the State Commissioner
for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu and issued to newsmen in Umuahia on
Sunday.
According to the release, “the contingent from Abia which
includes security personnel are expected to ensure the safe return of the over
200 students of Abia origin back to the state capital, Umuahia, where the
evacuees will be welcomed by the Governor”.
Earlier, Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), a socio-cutural
organization had asked governors of the southeast zone to immediately evacuate
Igbo students from the University of Jos.
This is following the rising tension in Jos.
The apex youth group in Igbo land stressed that the urgency
of the security situation in Jos led the Benue and Kogi state governors to
evacuate their students in UNIJOS, hence the need for Southeast and South-south
governors to immediately rescue and save the life of the Igbo students studying
in the northern institution.
The Igboayaka O. Igboayaka led Ohanaeze Youth Council in a
release, revealed that it was now obvious that the Fulani herdsmen had declared
war against all other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria
Recall that Plateau state was plunged into a security crisis
recently following the massacre of over 26 travellers on Saturday.
Some schools in the state have shut down following the
incident pending when normalcy returns to the affected areas.
