A group, Nigerian Feminist Forum
(NFF) has lashed out at the Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide
also known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, over his recent comment on
feminism, calling on the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal
Fellowship of Nigeria to caution him.
NFF Communications Officer,
Comrade Angela Nkwo, described the clergyman’s position as gross
misrepresentation which has provided for women to be silenced, ignored, and
subjected to gender-based violence during an interview with Dailypost on Wednesday.
She demanded immediate apology
from the respected bishop, saying the Nigerian Feminist Forum (NFF) has
received with disappointment the comments allegedly made by respected cleric,
Bishop David Oyedepo during his sermon at the Living Faith Church wherein he
made biased and confusing comments concerning his views on women in general.
Her word,”Oyedepo’s unsubstantiated claims said if feminist revolution is your vision, don’t attempt to get married, because it won’t work, failed to accept or even understand that marriage involves two consenting adults, who have to agree to live together.”
“Bishop Oyedepo’s comments
clearly justifies why women do not lead branches of the Living Faith Church
even when eminently qualified, and this is condemnable as women form a large
followership of his church.
“Feminism is not trouble, it is
not madness, it is inclusiveness and equity, and the time to act is now.
Include women in every space in Nigeria.
call to action.
“There are thousands of married
people who do not even know the word feminism yet are living unhappy and
unfulfilled lives simply because they married wrongly or are living with
abusive partners.
“Bishop Oyedepo made it seem as
though marriage is an achievement which it is clearly not, it is simply the
decision of two consenting adults to live together and where not workable they
go their separate ways.
“We need to ask the eminent
cleric, did feminists and the coalitions cause the unproductivity of his
Pastors, or the insecurity and high inflation that has enveloped the nation?
She further said,”Bishop Oyedepo
who by his comments has displayed his misogynist tendencies, advocating those
women seeking to be heard as misfits and as the causes of divorce.
“For the purposes of
enlightenment, feminism is about demanding gender equity, justice and access to
equal resources for everyone, which will benefit families, communities and the
wider society as a whole.
“Nigerian women grapple with
insecurity, sexual and gender-based violence, lack of access to quality
healthcare and education, oppressive cultures, widowhood practices, wife
inheritance, female genital mutilation, cultural beliefs that subdue women such
as the land ownership, and being seen and not heard, and these must be stopped.
And the time to act is now.”
